Space, the vital frontier

The UK space industry is one of 13 Critical National Infrastructure sectors. In the UK, the space and satellite communications industries support much of the technologies and services that are essential to modern society. These include GPS, weather forecasting, telecommunications, and remote sensing, with Low Earth Orbit Satellite services providing much of the world’s broadband and 5G networks. This has resulted in an increase in the importance of ensuring space networks have high degrees of cyber security and resilience

The threat is real

Recent geo-political events have put the space industry firmly in the sights of malicious actors, highlighting just how vulnerable some critical systems are. With most space-based systems being interconnected, a breach can have a cascading effect, impacting on wider network and possibly resulting in the loss of sensitive data, disruptions to communication, and even physical damage to satellite assets.

The impact of a cyber-attack on the space industry can be far-reaching, affecting not just the space industry but also other sectors that rely on space-based systems, such as the national CNI functions, financial and transportation industries.

New industry, old problems

Organisations must be able to demonstrate that they understand and can control the identified risks to their systems. This can be achieved by not only applying appropriate technical risk controls on satellite networks, but also ensuring that consideration has been given to physical security, personnel security and supply chain risk management across the entire organisation.

What are the Space Industry Regulations 2021?

Introduced by the UK Government to implement the Space Industry Act 2018, it is a set of regulations governing spaceflight operations carried out in the UK. The act provides a framework for the development, operation, and regulation of space-related activities, including launch, operation of spacecraft, and spaceflight activities.
