THE CYBER SECURITY AND RESILIENCE BILL: SAFEGUARDING UK’S FUTURE
The UK government has unveiled the scope and ambition of the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill, further emphasising that bolstering the UK’s online defences is central to the government’s Plan for Change. The Bill is being used to make crucial updates to the NIS Regulations 2018 by bringing more organisations into scope. This legislative effort aims to bolster the country’s online defences, safeguarding the public and ensuring long-term economic growth. With cyber threats costing the UK economy nearly £22 billion between 2015 and 2019, and incidents such as last summer’s attack on Synnovis (a provider of pathology services to the NHS) causing significant disruptions, the need for robust cyber security measures has never been greater.
Scope and Ambition of the Cyber Security and Resilience Bill
The Cyber Security and Resilience Bill sets out comprehensive plans to enhance the protection of supply chains and critical national services, including IT service providers, hospitals, and energy suppliers. The bill will ensure that firms providing essential IT services to public services and the wider economy are no longer easy targets for cyber criminals. Approximately 1,000 service providers will be required to adhere to the new measures. Key components of the bill include:
- Strengthening Cyber Defences: The bill outlines new protections for vital infrastructure such as data centres and essential services such as water, power, and healthcare.
- Regulatory Powers: The Technology Secretary will have the authority to direct regulated organisations to enhance their cyber defences, ensuring a swift response to emerging threats.
