What are the ISA/IEC 62443 certifications?
The ISA/IEC 62443 certifications are the world’s only consensus-based series of automation cybersecurity standards, and a key component of government cybersecurity plans. The program covers the complete lifecycle of industrial automation and control system (IACS) assessment, design, implementation, operations, and maintenance. Completion of all 4 ISA/IEC 62443 exams results in the award of the ISA/IEC 62443 Expert status. The four certificates achieved are:
- Certificate 1: ISA/IEC 62443 Cybersecurity Fundamentals Specialist
- Certificate 2: ISA/IEC 62443 Cybersecurity Risk Assessment Specialist
- Certificate 3: ISA/IEC 62443 Cybersecurity Design Specialist
- Certificate 4: ISA/IEC 62443 Cybersecurity Maintenance Specialist

The ISA/IEC 62443 Series of Standards aims to inform people involved throughout the lifecycle of OT systems on how to securely design, implement, operate, maintain and retire control systems. The courses which make up the pathway to a 62443 Expert cover these phases in great detail, allowing individuals who complete them to better understand where 62443 guidance can be used to make industrial systems more robust, and more resilient to the growing threats they face across the various sectors and industries. Having achieved this milestone, I hope to combine the knowledge of the Standards with my experience working with various operators of OT systems to provide the most effective, and appropriate, guidance to clients moving forward.
